Step into Medieval England as you venture into the 16th century timber framed Lavenham Guildhall. Although it was built for the purpose of being a Guild for rich cloth merchants in effect the market went bust and the building was used as a gaol and a workhouse. You are free to take photos. I particularly liked the garden where they grow plants used for fabric dyes. There is a cafe and toilets. Perhaps the most poignant memories I take away from the visit are the stories of the workhouse inmates. Also take a look at the grim looking gaol. Loved the story of the local photographer as well.

Excellent in every way. Information was clearly laid out. The building has a fascinating history. The staff were first class.

Fascinating and very interesting place to visit. All the staff were very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. One especially, he asked whether I wanted to try on a replica gown, with great delight I accepted and he allowed me to wear it throughout our visit. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience and this made the day even more memorable! Good old National Trust

The National trust were giving evening tours around the village of lavenham. It was fascinating. We went back to the guildhall for a hot drink and cake afterwards.

This is a lovely, small attraction in the middle of Lavenham run by the national trust. You won't need more than an hour to see it. Inside, there are displays that highlight the lives of people in history that have had association with the guild hall. Apparently it was once a workhouse and a local bridewell. Nice tea room for once you are finished. The town of Lavenham is well worth seeing if you like Tudor architecture.
