On a recent visit to Long Melford, I visited the Famous Old House Gallery. As soon as I walked inside, I was greeted with a friendly welcome by the two owners. They were very polite and let me freely explore the gallery. The artwork was very beautiful, which included pieces from both the 19th and 20th century. I was also impressed with their contemporary range which featured some stunning Aboriginal artwork. And to top it off, they even showcased an exquisite range of glassware!They've also done an amazing job of restoring this building and the interior design looks gorgeous.They also have a pretty garden which you can see as you walk around the gallery. My overall experience of this gallery was very positive. The two owners were lovely and made me feel very welcome. I would definitely recommend visiting this gallery if you are in Long Melford.
My parents and I called in to see the gallery which they had often past and thought about visiting. We were met by the owner who certainly should not be dealing with people and the public in any capacity. He asked what they might be interested in seeing exactly before looking us up and down and saying not today and shutting the door on us. A business set to fail - if indeed it is a business at all. We were shocked a gallery could be so unpleasant to potential customers. We have been plagued by threatening phone calls and hateful Twitter, Facebook & Instagram tweets since writing a similar negative review for the Gallery owners on TripAdvisor - very unprofessional. We have logged these violations of TripAdvisor, Twitter, Facebook & Instagram usage polices with the appropriate bodies. This is a 100% genuine review. I think the response from the gallery owners below speaks volumes. WE HAVE NEVER visited their gallery other than the one day in January when we were treated appallingly and had the door shut in our faces - so did not technically go past their unpleasant threshold. Their responses are totally false and fabricated & do nothing other than put them both in a very bad light. They have put us off Long Melford let alone their little gallery. One to avoid!
I recently visited Melford's Famous Old House Gallery as I was looking to expand my Clive Madgwick collection. I met with Colin and Jane and found them both to be passionate and knowledgeable about their art and for the true art lover, a must visit location for the area. I will certainly be going back and would recommend them if your as serious about art as they obviously are.
Extremely Rude Owner - I rang the bell (I was with my elderly mother and my son) and asked if I could please browse the paintings. The owner said I could only come in if I was definitely going to buy. I replied 'Well I won't know if I want to buy unless I've browsed first' (a perfectly reasonable response) at which point he slammed the door in my face and locked it. I recommend people take their business elsewhere as there are plenty of other galleries in Long Melford and the surrounding villages. I gather from speaking to neighbours that this chap has something of a reputation for rudeness. I am a regular buyer and seller of good quality art and have never experienced such crass behaviour from a gallery owner.
